Lipreading isn’t an exact science
The way reading a book is
Its like navigating an obstacle course….

Lips come in all sizes and shapes
Thin and fat lips, tight and loose lips
Petite, average, generous, even puckered!

There are small mouths and big mouths
Each with their own peculiar mannerisms
Whether they be natural, adopted or learned.

Foreign objects often are dangling from lips
Or clenched in teeth, being chewed, spit, and loudly smacked
Adding texture to the words as they tumble forth

Missing teeth, dentures, stutters, lisps, braces, toothaches
And those upper lip hairy caterpillarsthat men love to nuture
All add to the overall challenge

There’s a difference between a shout and a whisper
A rapid fire staccato delivery and a leisurely country drawl
As well as a monotone that’s mumbled or grumbled

Imagine trying to decipher your dinner companion’s words
While they’re being chomped, squished, and crunched
Before, during, and after each forkful of food!

Many words look alike to the lipreader
Like have-half…… had-hat-and….two-too-due
Sometimes it’s guesswork, othertimes it’s logic and reasoning

Finally, contrasting shadows and light
Either enhance or distort the efforts
And its always impossible to lipread in the dark!

Whew, I’ve covered the entire obstacle course
Its not without its frustrations and mishaps
But somehow I get by……

Marveling anew each day
Amazing evocative power of words
Dancing like a will o’ the wisp
Mesmerizing
Enthralling
Bewitching
Soaring on enchanted flights of fantasy
Blazing new trails of introspection
Guiding on soul-searching journeys
Awakening
Encouraging
Empowering
Expanding far horizons of thought
Quenching the thirst for knowledge
Validating right from wrong, true from false
Searing
Wounding
Piercing
Baring innermost selves
Breaking hearts and minds
Leaving haunting afterimages in the psyche
Soothing
Healing
Forgiving
Bridging continental divisions
Teaching the true meaning of tolerance
Dispelling phantasms of fear and confusion
Hearing
Listening
Speaking
Understanding this triad of communication
Catty cornering the prate from the depths
Craving the heart sound of belonging
Merging
Uniting
Homogenizing
Never-ending lessons never forgotten
The evocative power of words….
Pick them carefully
If you dare.

For Oreo

It’s been three months now
Since the heartbreaking decision
To bid you farewell
Yet not a day goes by
Where we don’t think of you

The cool tuxedo dude
We affectionately called you
Echoes of your distinctive meow
Linger here in our house
We still smile at the memory
Of your lopsided Groucho Marx moustache

We were so abundantly blessed
With your presence and your love
Our lives enriched
By your playful and mischievous nature
During the time we fostered you
How could anyone not want the same?

Our anger still lingers
That you were ultimately deemed disposable
By those who renegaded on the adoption contract
All too easily abdicating their responsibility
All they had to do was make one phone call
One simple phone call
And we would have gladly welcomed you back
With no question or reservation

You and all those we foster
Deserve to live for many years
In comfort and happiness
Loved as a member of the household
We will forever live with the regret
For our error in judgement
That made your furever home false
You should not have had to travel
Over the Rainbow Bridge so soon

Precious Oreo
Cool tuxedo dude
We miss you

When I’m with you
I am amazed
At the evocative power
Of your gentle touch
The indescribable joy
Your sweet embrace brings
The effervescent dance of my heart
When you softly whisper my name

When I’m with you
I no longer am a mere madrigal
A bayadere without animation
A martin on a meandering flight
Misfortunes are dumped from my kalathos
I cast off the weariness of my milklivered existence
I find peace from the clashing
Of plangent and sepulchral nonsense

When I’m with you
I have no need for masks
There’s nothing left to hide
My fears and insecurities become pellucid
The inherent innocence of youth is rediscovered
Nostalgia gives away to future visions
Pessismism changes to optimism
Whys are transformed to why nots

When I’m with you
Our essences soar in a cordiform dance
Pure universal love erogenously simplified
Yet so essential to our balance
With the benediction of sage gods and goddesses
Tongues partake in gustatory communion
And the ubiquitous restlessness of our souls cease
In each others hearts we are home to stay

On the way to work
Thoughts on the traffic light
About to go green
The day ahead at the lab
Data to be measured
Recorded, and double-checked
For accuracy …
Just a moment ago ~

Someone else on their way
Thoughts on their traffic light
About to go red
No other thought but beating the light
Acceleration full out now
Too much for the trailer behind
The hitch lets loose …
Just a moment ago ~

The light now green
Thoughts on moving forward
Not aware of
The careening trailer now loosed
On a collision course
Too late to avoid it let alone see it
Metal crunches, glass shatters …
Just a moment ago ~

 Stunned and dazed
Against the deployed airbag
Pain and blood filling the senses
The intersection fills again
But no one stops
No one cares
They’re on their way to work …
Just a moment ago ~

Trailer has been towed away
Having totaled the Explorer that saved a life
No one came forward
No one appeared to have seen the other vehicle
Lose its load and leave the scene
They only complained about it
The wreck in their way …
Just a moment ago ~

Abrasions and cuts
A broken right hand
Blessed and lucky to be alive and walking
Another Explorer on its way
Will sit in the driveway
Soon enough
Life goes on from what happened …
Just a moment ago ~

Are we so busy we don’t see
Any moment may well be our last
Schedules and appointments
Fill our thoughts
No room for just being here right now
To say “I love …” or “I forgive …”
Because they’re gone and it was all over …
Just a moment ago ~

Dedicated to my very dear friend Lynn Kupfer,
who survived the moment and is still here for me to love
for all the moments we may have left ~
