A 2009 Christmas Poem

Since that first day this past April
When I escaped serious peril
I’ve realized anew
The innocence I once knew
Is slowly crumbling
Mortality is humbling

Forever is just an eye-blink away
The march of time we cannot sway
No longer can I say I’m invincible, I’m strong
That’s why it’s so wrong
Not to take this moment now
To find the words to tell you somehow

How much you mean to me
Despite the passage of time
I’m reaching out to those I hold dear
To say what I want you to hear
Wherever you may be, wherever you are
I want you to know how much I care

Forever is just an eye-blink away
The march of time we cannot sway
It’s too easy nowadays to lose perspective
And avoid being introspective
But we can’t let the daily grind make us lose focus
And let those precious moments of sharing escape us

We have to try to break down those lengthy silences
And mend those broken fences
We have to try to restore communication
And converse without provocation
We have to try to stop being judgmental
And simply celebrate being sentimental

Forever is just an eye-blink away
The march of time we cannot sway
All my joys and all my sorrows
All my yesterdays, todays, and tomorrows
For better or for worse
You’ve help shape my life’s course

So with the approach of this holiday season
I’ve created this poem for a loving reason
Please let my words warm your heart
Even though we’re far apart
Even though times spent together are much less
Love for family and friends in these times is still priceless

Forever is just an eye-blink away
The march of time we cannot sway
When the sun rises on the brand new year
May all your hopes and dreams dawn clear
May each and every one of you
Always know that my love for you is true

Christmas Eve Night

Cold, clear night in Mississippi
In this tiny town
Nestled between the Wolf and the Pearl
No snow on the ground
But that’s quite allright
It’s still Christmas Eve
Everyone’s gone to bed
I’m alone
Save for the golden laborador
Laying at my feet
Sharing the dying warmth of the fireplace
Sparkling Christmas tree
Seems to have lost its enchantment
Paling in comparision
To the star-light connection
That stretches between us
I read again upon each page
The poetic words that flew
From your heart
To your fingers
To me..
Tis’ said
Home is where the heart is
Mine is where ever you are
This Christmas Eve night

Holly Holy

on this winter’s night
let me fill
your stocking with song
as the icicles melt
into holly holy rain
salty tracks
to be tasted and cherished
while overcast skies
are torn asunder
between your heart and mine
our souls joined as one
by threads woven in the stars of old
while the flame elves dance
their ring of fire on the yuletide logs
let me drink
of your holly holy eyes
sparkling in the candlelight
mystifying wonders
to be found in their depths
I don’t need mistletoe
to answer the sweet enchantment
of your parted lips
holly holy dream
let me adorn
a garland of kisses
upon your skyclad flesh
promises of ectasy and fulfillment
my hands
a gentle sleigh
following the course
of your soft smooth curves
and making snow angels
at the hollow of your back
my tongue
southward seeking
your delicate pink ornament
hidden amongst tiny downy wreaths
who could have foretold
I would find the precious gift of you
this Christmas night
holly holy dream
let me be your shelter
take and wrap
this moonlight blanket of my love
around you
and
sleep
in the heavenly peace
of my arms
holly holy love

Christmas 1999

Near, far, where ever we are
Birmingham….Thibodaux….Jamacia
Gathered in kinship together once more
In enchantment, these golden days of yore

Our hearts filled with levity
Our troubles will be miles away
‘Cause this Christmas we have all come home
Where the love light gleams and wishes roam

The halls are decked with Mom’s crafts creations
We think she’s teaching Bali to Fa~La~La~
And while Dad pa rum pum pums away in his workshop
Three sawdust sprinkled cats keep time from atop

The Jamaican connection made it safely to mainland
My, how they’ve changed, Kathy and Whit, Oh, what a tan!
Eager Devin and Taylor with eyes all aglow
Santa’s on his way, a fact they know

Instead of a partridge in a pear tree
And chestnuts roasting on an open fire
There’s Canadian Geese a-honking just for fun
Sadie and Reed sprawled a-toasting in the December sun

Through the years we dream of white Christmas
Jingling and giggling all the way
Tis’ hard to listen for those sleigh bells of sorts
While parading barefooted and decked in Bermuda shorts

Everybody knows a turkey and a spinach casserole go together
Beth and Lynn’s Nintendo adventures leave us laughing all the way
Oh what fun it is with Skywalker, Zelda, and Kirby
Santa is on his way, and maybe travelling with a Furby!

Louise is gonna cry and pout, I’m telling you why
If there’s no salsa for her burritos, oh, my!
If dear Aunt Mary could only have her own way
Red-nosed Rudolph would guide the USS Enterprise instead of a sleigh

Near, far, where ever we are
Growing stronger together both close and afar
We will venture home again for Christmas if the fates allow
So let us hang this shining star upon the highest bough

And have ourselves a merry little christmas….. together

For my family
With all my love
Lynn
