The Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here,
That pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends
So they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine,
And our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old
Are restored to health and vigor;
Those who were hurt or maimed
Are made whole and strong again,
Just as we remember them
In our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content,
Except for one small thing;
They each miss someone very special to them,
Who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together,
But the day comes when one suddenly stops
And looks into the distance.
His bright eyes are intent;
His eager body quivers.
Suddenly he begins to run from the group,
Flying over the green grass,
His legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted,
And when you and your special friend finally meet,
You cling together in joyous reunion,
Never to be parted again.
The happy kisses rain upon your face;
Your hands again caress the beloved head,
And you look once more
Into the trusting eyes of your pet,
So long gone from your life
But never absent from your heart
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together

For Tigger

In spite of you saying
“I’ve been expecting this for a long while”
I knew in our shared sorrow
It was not an easy decision
For you to make
Heartwrenching resolution
To do that final act of kindness
Her furry figure was no longer
Able to curl up close to you
Her eyes no longer gazed up to you
With the soulful innocence of that kitten
She was sixteen years ago
Her once dark striped muzzle
Streaked with white
Still continued to love your touch
To the very end
Together we share the tears today
For we have freed Tigger to the heavens
Where she will keep your mother company
And once more play with her sister Spitfire…
Tomorrow we will rejoice
For her spirit is no longer fettered
By earthly bounds
And will live forever in our hearts

For Oreo

For Oreo

It’s been three months now
Since the heartbreaking decision
To bid you farewell
Yet not a day goes by
Where we don’t think of you

The cool tuxedo dude
We affectionately called you
Echoes of your distinctive meow
Linger here in our house
We still smile at the memory
Of your lopsided Groucho Marx moustache

We were so abundantly blessed
With your presence and your love
Our lives enriched
By your playful and mischievous nature
During the time we fostered you
How could anyone not want the same?

Our anger still lingers
That you were ultimately deemed disposable
By those who renegaded on the adoption contract
All too easily abdicating their responsibility
All they had to do was make one phone call
One simple phone call
And we would have gladly welcomed you back
With no question or reservation

You and all those we foster
Deserve to live for many years
In comfort and happiness
Loved as a member of the household
We will forever live with the regret
For our error in judgement
That made your furever home false
You should not have had to travel
Over the Rainbow Bridge so soon

Precious Oreo
Cool tuxedo dude
We miss you

One Tiny Life

One tiny life
Born only four weeks ago
Solid black with tiny paws
Orphaned by misfortune
Found and rescued
Valiantly he tried
Clinging to this second chance
Valiantly we tried
Nursing and encouraging
This one tiny life
But the separation
From mother and littermates
Left him too vulnerable
Alone just a little too long
But long enough to get sick
Far too young and defenseless
Without his mother’s milk
To sustain and protect him
His littermates’ warmth
To sustain and comfort him
One tiny life
Born only four weeks ago
Breathed his last
Cradled in my gentle embrace
Gone to the Rainbow Bridge
Taking with him
Our tears
Knowing
Our unconditional love
One tiny life
He knew he was not alone
He left his tiny pawprints
Forever imprinted
In our hearts
